Even though their red cheeks might suggest otherwise, there's nothing a cockatiel should be ashamed of. The reddened cheeks lend these striking parakeets a certain charm and immediately catch the eye. In nature, the round patch is their trademark, as in their native Australia they are found exclusively with red cheeks, yellow heads, and otherwise grey and white plumage. However, in captive breeding, the varieties now range from entirely yellow or grey and white to mottled specimens. But regardless of color, their head crest remains a real eye-catcher. With their feathered crest, they almost resemble a smaller version of the cockatoo. The position of your feathered family member also provides insight into their mood. Whether relaxed, insecure, or excited, it's easy to see – this way you always have a good overview of whether the little birds are doing well and truly feeling comfortable. To ensure that the cockatiels have a happy future, you naturally have to pay attention to a few things in their care. These lively animals are extremely curious, social, intelligent, and outgoing, which is why not only suitable companions but also a sufficiently large aviary with perches and play opportunities are extremely important. An indoor or outdoor aviary with a minimum floor space of 2 square meters is recommended as a basic structure – additional space or free flight in the house is, of course, welcome and will be gladly accepted by the birds. For outdoor housing, an insulated shelter is also necessary so that the little ones have a dry place to retreat to even in bad weather. This doesn't mean that cockatiels are inherently afraid of water; quite the opposite. A nice, gentle summer rain, or even their water bowl, is readily used as a bathing opportunity when the weather is right and they're in the mood. These extremely versatile birds are certainly true entertainers who are constantly coming up with new ideas. They would be very happy with a new home with other cockatiels and plenty of opportunities for activity. There are currently several cockatiels available for rehoming.
