Currently, several canaries are available for rehoming.
Originally descended from the Canary Serin, these lively and vocally gifted little birds found their way into the homes of the nobility at the beginning of the 15th century as so-called "sugar birds". Due to increasing demand, breeding began early, and numerous breeds developed, differing in their song, color variations, and plumage structures. Especially because of the beautiful song of the males, canaries achieved enormous fame and popularity. The song pattern, certain notes, and rhythms are influenced not only by genetic predisposition but also by individual learning. From molt to molt, the young birds continue to develop, taking adult males as role models, imitating them, and constantly trying out new things. Throughout their lives, they continue to refine their melodies, and these clever birds are even inspired by unfamiliar sounds or the songs of other birds. The females also occasionally sing, but their songs are considerably shorter and less elaborate than those of the more vocal males. However, these small, feathered inhabitants can also impress with their appearance. From classic canary yellow through orange and red tones to brown or mosaic-colored birds, breeding organizations have now recognized over 400 color varieties. Once you have decided to keep these golden companions, proper care is crucial to ensure a long, happy, and melodious life. Given the right conditions, these birds can reach an age of 10 to 12 years. To fully express their complex social behavior, keeping them in a flock of at least four birds is extremely important. Socialization with other bird species is also possible, but even these cannot replace partners of their own species. A large free-flight aviary in the apartment or, with appropriate shelter, in outdoor housing is just as feasible as permanent free flight in the apartment or a room specifically set up for the birds. Detailed advice is available from the animal keepers. Natural branches are recommended as perches, along with various hiding places in the form of bushes or other sheltered areas. The birds also enjoy nibbling on the natural branches and grasses, which provides enrichment. Furthermore, these items offer a good balance and prevent monotony. Water and sand bowls for bathing, as well as a variety of food and toys, are also readily accepted by the birds.
