Tierschutzverein Bautzen e. V.

The initiator of the association's founding, Ms. Margot Friedrich, appealed to all animal lovers through the press in early 1990 to form an animal welfare association. The first 20 animal lovers contacted her, and thus the "Bautzen Animal Welfare Association" was founded on June 20, 1990. Our umbrella organization is the German Animal Welfare Association. Ms. Margot Friedrich was elected as its first chairwoman. In 2007, our long-time chairwoman, Ms. Margot Friedrich, was awarded the St. Francis of Assisi Medal by the German Animal Welfare Association for her life's work on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Our association currently has 123 members. In 1992, the city of Bautzen donated the former dog kennels of the Bautzen Prison on "Karnickelberg" to our association for use as an animal shelter. It existed until 1994. The city of Bautzen had a memorial for the victims of Stalinism erected on this site. From 1994 to 1997, we were able to temporarily use the dog enclosure of the former explosives factory in Gnaschwitz. In March 1995, the former Bloaschütz nursery, with a total of 8,300 square meters, was purchased for expansion into a new animal shelter. Preparatory construction work began on May 1, 1995, and our first animal shelter in Bloaschütz opened on October 11, 1997. Funding from the Free State of Bavaria and donations were also used for the construction project.
