Our Lex is very handsome, but unfortunately not for everyone: Lex was surrendered to us by a family after he suddenly exhibited behavioral problems in the form of aggression towards the father and later also towards the children. This behavior became too dangerous for the family after a few weeks. He had previously lived with them for 1.5 years without any incidents. Initial veterinary examinations revealed no indication of any underlying health issues. We currently assume that a combination of his rather unstable nature, his growing up, and ambiguities in human-dog communication have led him to start disciplining his people. At our animal shelter, Lex quickly bonded with his caregivers in the first few weeks and allows them to do many things to him (brushing, body examinations in a "relaxed environment" and atmosphere, putting on a muzzle/harness). He also shows signs of tension with us as soon as he dislikes something and can be threatening if his body language is not recognized or is misinterpreted. Therefore, we are looking for a very experienced and confident home for Lex in this regard. For safety reasons, Lex will wear a muzzle outside our property and in new situations/when meeting new people. Unfortunately, children can no longer live in the same household. Lex's personality is fundamentally typical of a German Shepherd. He wants to please (but not at any cost), use his mind, be kept busy in a sensible way, go for long walks, and always be included. If he isn't sufficiently exercised, Lex quickly becomes a restless bundle of nerves. His new owners should avoid ball games and anything that reinforces his predatory instincts, as Lex has already developed impulse control problems as a result. Activities that require him to use his mind are also a lot of fun for Lex and are much healthier for his psyche and further development. With other dogs, it's a matter of compatibility. Lex's playmate should like his style of play and not be put off by his sometimes overly familiar behavior – then both will get along very well. Lex doesn't usually start fights himself, but he doesn't like to be reprimanded by another dog, for example, for being pushy, and then he doesn't help to defuse the situation. Unfortunately, Lex still shows great excitement on the leash, even leash aggression, when he makes eye contact with other dogs – this needs to be practiced. Lex loves going for walks and likes to show us animal caretakers in the hallway outside his room exactly where his harness is hanging so we can finally put it on him and he can zoom off. ;) The longer he goes for a (calm) walk, the more Lex visibly relaxes with us and then usually walks very nicely on the leash beside us. Lex could stay alone for a few hours without any problems in his old home. After settling in and getting enough exercise, this will probably not be a problem in his new home either. Lex travels well in the car, but is generally excited during car rides – true to his nature.
